In fall 1999, the Global Campus started delivering the first distant learning Masters of Computing Science in Business Information Technology- BIT in partnership with Middlesex University in London through distance learning. This challenging and exciting MSc program combines local support and tutors with CD-ROM based materials and the Internet, enabling students and lecturers to work together across the globe.
The program provides students with in-depth knowledge of the competitive use of information technology in modern organizations and covers contemporary topics such as e-commerce, systems analysis and strategic IT management. The program is aimed at managers, prospective managers, and those who wish to understand information technology and be capable of planning, designing and managing information systems within organizations.
The Business Information Technology MSc degree is awarded by the University of Middlesex, UK. The university is the content provider while RITSEC develops the courseware. The web-accessed content developed by RITSEC is on RITSEC's workstations and servers found on RITSEC's premises.
Three web servers are connected to RITSEC's local area network. Students and lecturers interact through the Internet; locally students meet once a week in their Learning Support Centers for tutorials, support and access the library. They interact with their professors in UK regularly through the video conferencing sessions. The program is designed for flexible part-time study and is ideal for those in full-time employment. Students take two modules (30 credits) per trimester and finish the program in two years.
Program Outline
The following are the modules which are studied on the MSc Business Information Technology degree. Assessment for these modules are a combination of coursework and unseen written examination which take place at the end of each semester. Coursework includes individual assignments, and project activities. The project work is assessed mainly on the basis of your final dissertation.

Information Systems Analysis and Design
This modules aims to introduce a range of techniques within both structured and Object-oriented methods, in order to enable you to analyze and design new or existing information systems. You will be introduced to the practical use of CASE tools in modeling and documenting analysis and design specifications. Different lifestyle models will also be discussed.
Object-oriented Software Development
Students will learn the basic principles of application development using Object orientation and the use and structure of JAVA, an object-oriented programming language. This knowledge will be sufficient for the development of simple applications, and a foundation for the acquisition of the skills needed for more complex projects.
Design and Evaluation of Interactive Systems
This module focuses on the design and evaluation of interactive systems, for both individual and group use. Techniques for developing good design solutions and for evaluation existing designs are presented. There is a particular emphasis on the design of systems that support collaboration between users, and on organizational issues.
Management Support Systems
An overview of the use of artificial intelligence techniques to aid in managerial decision-making. A framework of decision support systems is developed to show how techniques such as expert systems, neural networks and fuzzy logic can be used effectively in business. Students will acquire skills in using developing and evaluating such systems.
Database Management Systems
A perspective on database management systems structure and function is provided. Topics introduced include: Architecture of databases Data models: network, hierarchical, relational, Object-oriented, relational databases, Normalization, front-end systems. Database environment: security, recovery and concurrency, data and database administration, object-oriented database systems, client-server and distributed database systems and research topics in DBMSs.
Computer Networks: Operations and Applications
A framework for describing the operation of computer networks is developed. Within this framework, we start with the operation of local-area networks, packet-switched networks and the Internet. After this, the module moves to the uses made of these networks, concentrating on business applications. The effect on organization of introducing such networked applications is also examined.
Information Systems Management Strategy
Students taking this module will appreciate: the critical relationship between IT and business; different organizational structures and different ways that IS/IT activities of organization are managed: how to exploit IT at a strategic level to gain competitive advantage: including the application of strategic analysis techniques; professional and regulatory issues regarding IT management.
Internet Commerce
This module will equip students with server programming skills which will allow them to create on-line businesses. Besides these programming skills, this module will also cover issues of security and Internet marketing to provide a background to a very new and exciting area of computing science.
